NewNoize.com Gizmodgery Review
Self's Gizmodgery, is an awesome musical experience that is genuinely alternative. Oh, did I mention that the album's music is produced only through the use of TOYS? Yes, that right. Self even lists the 30-odd gadgets on the back of the CD case, ranging from "my first drum set" to "various toy cell phones." Self's mastermind, Matt Mahaffey, has squeezed every bit of tunefulness from his "instruments". Credit Self's home-recording techniques that make even the tinniest toy drum sound like a Led Zepplin back beat. This consistency of production makes for one hell of a party album. The tongue-in-cheek single, "Trunk full'a Amps" is delivered with such gusto by Mahaffey that one actually believes this white boy actually drives a low-rider with serious ground effects: "Gotta Trunk full 'a amps Mother Fucker/Like Freddie Mercury/Mother!" Another highlight of Gizmodgery is the remake of Michael McDonald's "What a Fool Believes". This version is much like the original 80's keyboard number ? only on Steroids. And, of course what does this say about 80's music that toys can outdo it. Regardless of what instruments are used, Gizmodgery is well worth a spin.
